Module 2: Ways to Help in the Classroom

Problems and Solutions

Educational Need: Challenges with communication
Possible Strategies: Students with limited or no verbal communication skills need intervention in order to learn to communicate their needs. Otherwise problem behavior may be used as a form of communication (such as hitting or screaming to communicate frustration). There are a variety of approaches to teaching communication skills to students with autism, and details are beyond the scope of this tutorial. You can explore some common methods at the links below.
Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) and Naturalistic Intervention
The Verbal Behavior Approach
Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
Sign Language

Educational Need: Disruptive behavior
Possible Strategies: perform a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to assess the reasons behind the behavior, and teach an appropriate behavior to take the place of the disruptive behavior. For more information about the FBA process, please visit Positively Autism’s ABA Tutorial and consult with you school district’s Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or behavior specialist if one is available. Also, keep in mind the antecedent and consequence interventions described in previous sections (transition warnings, token economy, etc.). Positively Autism also offers free behavior resources here.
