Just Give Him The Whale!: 20 Ways to Use Fascinations, Areas of Expertise, and Strengths to Support Students with Autism
Educational Need: Engagement/Motivation
Possible Strategies:
- Use special interests for teaching (as described above).
- Provide the student with choices, such as where to work (desk or table), choice of seat (red chair or green chair), writing instrument (pencil or pen), etc.
- Intersperse easy and difficult tasks: in a teaching session, it may help reduce frustration and increase motivation if only some of the material presented is new or difficult for the student.
- Reward and encourage attempts (instead of only 100% correct responses): if a child is making an effort to respond correctly, praise and reinforcement can be given to the student to encourage him or her to keep trying.
