Module 5: Teaching New Skills and Behaviors

Token Economy, Continued

When first teaching a child to use a token economy, the child may not understand what the tokens are for. To help teach it, you can start by having a token board with just one token. Ask the child a question that he knows, and when he makes a correct response, give him the token and help him put it on the board. Then, immediately give the child another reinforcer, such as the candy. This helps the child associate the candy with the points. You might say something like, "Wow, you got all your points!" while showing the child that the board is full.

Once the child understands how this board works, you can start having him earn two tokens to receive the reward. The visual cues of the outlines of the tokens help the child know how many he needs to earn.

At this point, you can gradually start using boards with progressively more tokens. Just keep in mind the child's current attention span when deciding how many tokens to require before earning the reward.
