Module 4: Data Collection

Types of Data

Latency Recording

Latency recording is used to record the amount of time between an instruction or prompt and the initiation of a behavior. For example, you might want to track the amount of time it take a child to greet a peer after a prompt to say hello. Or, you might be interested in reducing the amount of time it takes a child to start cleaning up toys after you sing a "clean up song." Another example would be the amount of time it takes a student to begin putting on his shoes once he or she has been asked to do so.

Again, the behavior should be clearly defined, so that it is clear when to stop the timer or stopwatch. You'll start the stopwatch right after you've given the instruction or asked the question. You'll stop the stopwatch once the child starts doing what you've asked. An example of a latency recording sheet is here.

Review: Latency recording is used to record the amount of __________ between an instruction or prompt and the __________ of a __________.

Permanent Product Recording

A permanent product is simply a product left over as the result of a behavior. This could be a completed worksheet, a cleaned bedroom, or a finished art project.

So, to evaluate whether your child has cleaned her room or finished his homework, you don't need to observe the child the whole time. You can look at the cleaned room or the finished homework to determine whether the behaviors were done.
