Module 4: Data Collection

Types of Data

Event Recording

Event recording is used to take frequency data on a behavior. Thus, in event recording, you would make some sort of notation, such as a checkmark or tally, each time a behavior occurs. You might take event recording data by making a tally on a data sheet each time a child makes a request (mand) for something during a 20 minute observation period.

A sample data sheet for collecting event recording data can be found here. Please review the data sheet before progressing with the tutorial.

Event recording is appropriate for behaviors that are generally short in duration and have a clear beginning and ending, such as the number of times a student dropped his or her pencil on the floor during a class period or the number of times a student said, "juice" to request a drink during lunch time.
