Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT)
Brief Description: An interventions similar to incidental teaching and naturalistic interventions with a focus on teaching in pivotal areas. Pivotal areas are skill domains that, when targeted for intervention, produce widespread improvement.

Research Status from Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT): May be effective; more research is needed.

Research Status from the National Standards Report: Established, for children with autism ages 3 – 9 years.

Reinforcement
Brief Description: Providing a pleasant consequence (a reward) after a certain behavior, in order to increase that behavior. In order for a consequence to be considered a “reinforcer,” it must increase the behavior it follows.

Research Status from the National Standards Report: Established, as part of a behavioral package (a variety of behavioral interventions) for all ages of students with autism and PDD-NOS.
